Hi,

For a few years now, iPhone has had a really cool universal remote program. With the release of the accessible iPhone on June 19, VoiceOver, its not bad screen reader, will be able to talk in the Remote Control program.

With a new AT&T contract, the new iPhone sells for $199 in the 16 gb version and $299 in the 32 gb one.

The full feature list (look for the accessibility features on apple.com/accessibility) is pretty incredible. Only about 8 months back, I bought my iPod Nano for $150 in the 8 gb configuration. The iPhone does all the iPod can plus about a bazillion other things. Perhaps the coolest feature is that you can point your iPhone at a building and it will give you its address, the name if it's a business, the menu if its a restaurant and tons of other stuff in a massive online database. It's got a great GPS system with lots of features designed especially for us blinks.

Also, it contains the new, scriptable version of VoiceOver which an adequate programmer can do many very cool things with.

Happy Hacking,
cdh

Alex, many of the media version of vista computers come with a remote just for this, and this card may well have one also, take a look.

I will look at this, thanks. Any way of doing it without the tuner, relying on the broadcast of the device connected to the router and programming a remote? The purpose of the pc is to act as a recorder, but it cannot have a normal keyboard and mouse since the user is not comfortable with them (plus will forget any instructions the next day) but a remote is fine.

Have a great day,
Alex

Hi all,
I am trying to convince my family that we should go with a device
that broadcasts TV signals over the wifi network, instead of
buying
new TV units and a DVR or two. I have two questions about this,
the
first of which is somewhat off topic for this list:

1. Can someone watching TV on a laptop or desktop record what
they
are watching to a video file, preferably with a free program? No
one
here has XP Media Center or anything above Vista Home Basic.

2. My grandmother, who lives with us, hates to use a computer
but
has an intuitive grasp of all things TV/VCR-related that are
controlled by a remote. Could I set up a computer so that she
can
record shows at anytime (live or on a schedule), and control it
with
a remote? We have plenty of remotes around, and I know I have
seen
USB/IR converters before, so could I write (or better yet,
download)
a program that will let her just record, play, pause, stop, and
so
on with a remote? She does not need music playing, internet, or
anything else; the pc would basically emulate a DVD recorder,
except
with a LOT more storage space and without the annoying messing
with
disks, erasing disks when they get full, and so on.
Thanks for any help or advice.

Have a great day,
Alex
