I don't know. Perhaps the LIBTIF library has a function to identify the TIF type of a file. Alternatively, I think the following free program would include such functionality:

ImageMagick: Convert, Edit, and Compose Images

Jamal,
How can I know if a tiff file I have is a "compressed" tiff or an
"uncompressed" one (if such a thing exists)?

Sorry, I don't know what happened to the reply I tried to send to you the
next day after getting your message. Unfortunately, I got fatal execution
errors. There were two tasks I tried. One was to use the free NirCmd.exe
utility to create a .tif snapshot of a window and than try to get text
from it. The other was to drop in your tesseract.exe for an older,
minimalist one that I include with PDF2TXT.

Here is more info on how to replicate what I was testing. NirCmd is
available at

NirCmd - Windows command line tool
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

The syntax is

NirCmd.exe Save ScreenShotWin FileName.tif

PDF2TXT is available at

http://EmpowermentZone.com/p2tsetup.exe

tesseract.exe is located by default in the directory

C:\PDF2TXT\OCR

In the PDF2TXT dialog, you can press Alt+F to check the Image Format
checkbox, which then causes the program to attempt OCR rather than
other text extraction methods.

Let me know if you have more questions. I'm copying this message to the
ProgrammingBlind list as well in case anyone thesere wants to try these
tests.

I've just been waiting to hear back if there were any issues with the
tarball I already sent your way.
