But remember, that's not the be all end all search field. Sometimes to find crap buried deeply within your computer, you have to hit the F3 key from the desktop and run a full search. It's often quicker for that to come up. -----Original Message----- From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Sina Bahram Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 9:35 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: help with jaws and windows seven? Yes, in reverse order: Go into the bios, have someone read it to you of course, and turn off media keys. That will re-enable all your F keys. Now, with regards to the start menu. Sorry man, no more classic start menu ... I know, it sucks, but it's ok. Check this out: that search field is insanely useful. Just hit start, and just type in winamp. Hit enter, don't even wait for jaws to read anything ... Winamp will come up. It sometimes takes a few hours or a few days for it to index everything, but you have keyword access to all of your applications and documents, directly in front of you at your finger tips. You want firefox, just type the first couple of letters: bam! It comes up, hit enter. It even does synonym search ... So for example, let's say you know that you want screen reader stuff, you can type in "screen reader", and the first option is "use screen reader", the next one is "change the narrator voice", etc, etc ... Also, it's like a virtual run dialog box too. Just type cmd, and hit enter, you're in a command prompt. You can obviously type web URI's in there like "www.google.com" and you've got google in front of you. If you ever want the run dialog box, you can always hit windows+r to bring it up like before. Hope this helps? Take care, Sina ________________________________ From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Littlefield, Tyler Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 9:21 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: help with jaws and windows seven? Hello all, I have a few questions. I'm used to going directly to my start menu, and hitting say, w for wimamp. Now in seven (Transitioning from xp to seven), w or any other letter puts me in some search box. I just used s for shutdown, and I got lots of weird results, none of them having to do with shutdown. Is there a way to like... fix this start menu? Also, I have a dell, and for whatever reason my f1-f12 keys don't work, so things like ins+f11, alt+f4, ins+f12 and that don't work. Is there a way to fix this? Any accessibility tips people can give me for seven would be great.
