Hi Jim. To answer your question, You can use
Java Script or flash to do that for you.
You could even incoorporate, for example, a pause, a play and a mute button,
plus a volume control slider. Try googling for "embedding media controls with
java script and flash on a web page" as the search string.
I had lots of results from it. Good luck and cheers!

  Subject: Basic Internet Programming Question

  Hi,

If you have a web site, can you write software that plays sounds on someone’s
computer without them having to download them? If so, what language or
languages would you use?

  Thanks.

  Jim
