Use the exec function to execute a statement, e.g., an assignment to a
variable. Use the eval function to evaluate an expression, something
that returns a value. There are optional parameters to specify a
particular scope, but you can probably just pass a single string
parameter to inherit the current scope. If you are not doing so
already, try experimenting in the Python interpreter environment until
you get the results you want to put in your source code file.
