Hey Makers! There are two primary reasons that I'm a maker: my mother and my father. My mom stayed at home for my younger years, and took more community college art classes than I can remember. She's worked in clay, paper crafts, basketry, and beads. My dad worked as a tradesman before moving up the ladder, and did electrical work at the beginning of his career. I remember him making most of the furniture in my house, plus all the repairs on the house and cars. In an environment like this, it was only a matter of time before I started taking things apart and trying to put them back together in interesting configurations. So when they moved to Tucson and my dad started kicking around the idea of building a straw-bale house, I knew it was only a matter of time. After years of land shopping, financing, planning, etc, they have started work with their own four hands in the last year. I spent this weekend throwing bales of straw and cutting and bending steel. It was hard, but satisfying, work. In two weeks, my parents are having their bale-raising. Among the Tucson straw-bale scene, the bale-raising is the communal work-party where a bunch of people come over, raise the walls, and eat, drink, and make merry. November 3 and 4th, we'll be tying and throwing bails until the walls are raised high. My dad has agreed to give a short presentation on the principles of this unique architectural style to anyone interested, then we can work and play. The invitation is open for Sunday, Nov 4th, although we can arrange camping for people if they want to work both days and stay Saturday night. Anyone who works will be fed, and anyone who brings food will be appreciated. I think it's BYOB. Contact me for more precise arrangements. Thanks in advance. Josh
