Thank you Linda, I think that's fine. Sorry I didn't get back sooner.
(P.S. I think "select" comes from my computer background. I just like the
ring of the word, but of course "choose" is OK!)

Rory,
Honestly, I don’t see any diffference between “choose” and “select."
I can’t imagine Deirdre taking substantial to mean 3 pieces, when we do 15 or
so each year. But if that really worries you, I’ll take it out and just leave
“…the music,” if the others are OK with that.
To address your concern that Deirdre will continue to operate as usual and
introduce too many new pieces after the start of the year, I suggest adding
the statement, “Occasional changes to the repertoire may have to be made
after the beginning of the concert year, but such changes should be kept to a
minimum.” Does that work for you? How about the rest of you?
I added the part about the MC preparing and putting music in folders as a way
of impressing upon the AD the need to do this task in a timely fashion, so
that others can do their jobs properly. Again, I can take it out. Margaret,
Russ, Anna, Fernando any thoughts? I’d really like to get this finished
before 10PM tonight.
Thanks,
Linda

Hi,
I do not want to tell Deirdre she has to choose a "substantial" portion of
our music. I have no idea what that means, and I don't see how she would.
Three pieces out of a dozen could be considered a "substantial portion." I
think we just remove "a substantial portion of the". If she says what about
necessary changes that will inevitably come up, then fine, put something
about reasonable minimal changes (which is what I did originally but I don't
insist on it). Once we decide on the music for the year, I think Deirdre is
waaay too likely to start changing things, without notifying us until
rehearsal. That's why I said once she selects the music, any changes need to
be run by someone, and I think that's why you have a music committee. I agree
we aren't going to change Deirdre. But she's asking for clear guidelines. I
think this is very clear.
Also, why say something about what the music committee does? If they have the
music in time to give to us, and we decide we want everything in folders,
then fine. But what does that have to do with the AD's job description? All
she has to do is get it together in time for the Music Committee to
distribute it. So removing those two parts (and replacing "choose" with
"select", you have
2. Based on the theme designated by the Board of Directors for Phoenix
Chorale's charitable organization partner for the upcoming concert year (see
Section B), select the music to be performed during the year and supply a
list of the chosen pieces to the Music Committee in time for them to
distribute it at the first rehearsal. Arrange, compose, and adapt music as
needed.

Thanks everyone for the timely comments. Here is the latest draft of the JD.
Changes made:
1. Removed “When signed…” from first paragraph.
2. Changed verb forms throughout.
3. Added “The Artistic Director shall:” at beginning of Section A.
4. Did not change #2, except for verb forms. (Rory, the Music Committee has
no business deciding when and what Deirdre can add to our repertoire for the
year. If she presents too few pieces at the beginning of the year, then the
Music Committee can step in immediately and insist on getting more music
ASAP. If she still doesn’t comply, then we can take more drastic action. In
other words, we need to educate the Music Committee that they are responsible
for pressing the AD, if need be, to get a fairly complete music list before
the start of the concert year, and that the Board will back them up.)
5. “proposed concert dates" added to #3.
6. Compensation text added to #5 & #6.
7. Removed “that she deems…"
8. I think #9 is needed. I added a second part to the sentence. Let me know
if you still think it should be removed.
9. #12 - I removed “invited” so solicit is no longer redundant.
I’m going out for a bit. I will check for your comments and finish this draft
when I get home this evening.
Margaret, I’ll send you a separate doc with just the AD on it for forwarding
to Deirdre.
Linda
P.S - Has anyone heard from Fernando? Hope he’s OK.

Here are my modifications for the Job Description.
PLEASE NOTE: I am not looking at the final contract wording until the job
description is agreed upon by us and Deirdre.
One change of note I made: I gave the AD complete control over rejecting a
singer. I removed the part about not being able to bring them up to speed. I
don't think she needs to justify rejecting someone. If we don't like those
decisions, we can replace the AD. Otherwise I think that is micromanaging.
Thanks.
