[PCWorks] IE opens in full screen intermittently

I'm working on my friends computer, a basic Compaq Presario equipped
with Vista. Intermittently, IE opens up is full screen and with
protected mode on. Yet when the icon is clicked it opens normally and
with default settings loaded.
Numerous malware scan and av scans have been run with no threats showing.
Any ideas?
