Hi all,

First, I want to agree 100% with what Troth said - Don't take System Restore
for Granted..and I will add, do not take Go Back for granted either.

I stand by my original statement, I will not willingly own a computer
without GoBack installed. I will add, I would NOT disable System Restore.
I have used both and they did their job well. They just do different jobs.

I do not want to beat a horse to death... (no not beat a dead horse..as both
horses are alive and well and champions!) I feel I must have
miscommunicated my opinion and information about Go Back and System Restore.
I am going to try again, please bear with me. This is lengthy. If you do
not care about Go Back or System Restore, do not read on..just file this
away for a future need..or hit the delete key.

Back to the Go Back Vs System Restore comments.
There is NO Either Go Back OR System Restore controversy.
They are two programs that do different things and have different purposes.
They are two seemingly similar but not duplicate tools in your tool box to
help you maintain your machine in good working order or revert it back to
working order.

I do NOT think anyone should CHANGE from System Restore to Go Back.

Go Back does a completely different function.

Go Back is NOT Backup Software
------------------------------------------------
Go Back is NOT an entire Computer System Backup Program.

It does NOT make mirror or Ghost copies of the your drives. There a many
other programs that do just that.
A program such a Symantec/Norton Ghost or Diskeeper which comes with
Symantec/ Norton Partition Magic or one of many other programs does that
very well.
Those programs copy everything you tell it to and make an exact copy of it.
You can choose to use different methods to update this copy of your backup.
You can make NEW complete copies on what ever schedule you choose.
You can have the backup program running all the time and make constant
changes to your backup records live as you make changes on your computer.
This can include adding and deleting files or programs. Once the backup
changes are made, there is no way within that program to retrieve something
you have overwritten.
That is what GoBack does. It goes into the past and brings a file or files
into the present!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Go Back is NOT System Restore. (While both programs were written by Roxio,
there purposes are different. Microsoft had Roxio do what it does with
GoBack JUST FOR SYSTEM FILES! It was even called a lite version of Go Back
at one time!)

System Restore will ONLY revert System Files. It will NOT retrieve a word
document you changed last night. It will not get back a picture you
accidentally deleted or edited and then forgot to save the original.
--------------------------------------------------------

What Go Back does
------------------------------------------------------
Now, I am not an expert on exactly how Go Back does what it does, but I know
it takes care of the CHANGES you make as you make them.

Go Back will copy up to 4 GB of information/data on FAT 32 file systems or 8
GB of this information/data on NTFS systems on each physical hard drive.
(This does not mean per hard drive letter if you have a partitioned drive.
It means the limit is for each physical hard drive. If you have two hard
drives, then the amount is doubled. But, the limit is still PER physical
hard drive. If you only have 2 GB of data on one drive... that does NOT
increase the amount it will record on the other hard drive. The limit is
per physical hard drive.
This is the maximum amount of space Go Back is designed to handle. Needless
to say..if I have 200 GB of data, it is not going to have it all duplicated
for me.
What it will do, is add and delete what I add and delete WITHIN THE 4GB or
8 GB limitation mentioned above.

Here is a great example of what Go Back can do.
Say you install a program you download from the net from some site your
friend thought was cool. You install it and run it..it seems like fun.....
Within minutes things seem to go wacky with your system. You try to figure
out what is going on..and see that your virus protection has been disabled!
You cannot get it to restart. You do an online scan and find out you have
some awful virus!

Relax.... Start Go Back...and revert back to before you downloaded that
program. When you do this... you Go Back to before you got the virus and
guess what...NO virus and your virus protection program is working just fine
again..Whew! Go Back saved the day!

Now do not take this all for granted..remember Go Back has limitations as to
how far back it can go due to space limitations. So, act quickly.

This is not fool proof. New viruii and worms are released every day..and
maybe if they are left unchecked they can undo Go Back...but until then..
you are ok
Always be vigilant with your safety.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok.. let me try to make this a little less confusing.
I have all my programs installed.... new computer... no data........
I install Go Back.

I add data and delete data...and copy 2 GB of data from one physical drive
to another. Go Back will keep record of those changes.
If I decide I want to undo those changes, my options are to move the data
back to the original drive, or have Go Back revert the drives to a former
time.
Sort of like turning the clock back.
When I have accomplished this reversion to a prior time, Go Back will show
me a listing of the things it changed. I can review this listing and
find..oh nooo I did not mean to change my well written email to
PCTechTalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx to be changed to the original draft. I want all
those changes I made just before I reverted the drive! I can then
highlight that file and retrieve it and not have to rewrite the earlier
version!

As I make changes, Go Back records the changes. It does NOT keep things
forever. It keeps the changes within the limit of the space (4 GB or 8 GB)
available. When it has filled the space (4 Gb or 8 GB) it will then
overwrite the space and maintain the data to the limit available.

So, if you have made very few changes to a drive, it may keep stuff for
months. If you add and delete GB's a data every day...(not even I do
that..haha!)
then, your records will not be available for that long a period.

--------------------------------------------------
This is what the write up on this program says:
-----------------------------------------------------------
a.. SafeTry Mode lets you uninstall new software or undo actions with a
single click.
b.. Familiar, intuitive search bar makes it easy to find the files or
folders you want to restore.
c.. You can now drag and drop recovered files to their desired locations,
and rescue multiple files simultaneously.
d.. History buffer now holds up to 8 GB of data.¹
e.. New user interface lets you quickly recover files, restore an entire
disk drive, or activate SafeTry Mode.
f.. Restores your disk drive to a previous healthy state after a system
crash, failed software installation, user error, virus attack, or other
problem.
g.. Allows you to restore just the files or folders you need, or an entire
drive.
h.. AutoBack enables you to schedule regular rollbacks.
i.. Virtual Drive displays a previous state of a disk drive.
¹Quantity of historical information stored depends on available hard disk
space. Maximum history on FAT32 filesystems is 4GB

If you are interested in buying Go Back here are some links
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a $20 rebate for these below sites, but, I am not sure if anyone
has the required previous programs to qualify for it.
If you have Norton Systemworks, you have the lite version of Go Back. You
can click on the upgrade link there and see what it costs.

If any of these links do not work, go to the website and do a search for
GoBack (no Spaces)

Well, I've just viewed my SysRestore and the following dates have a
system footprint:-
January: 9,10,12,13,15-18,20-24,31.
February: 3,4,6-12,14,16,18-20,22-24,28
March: 2-8.

I have, therefore, many options. If GoBack presents a ghost of the HDD,
with this number of options(40), I could not hazard a guess as to the
space it would occupy. GoBack looks like a $US69 buy, so these
comparisons favour SystemRestore exclusively, in my humble opinion. I
could not advise anybody to look at changing, but I would have some
regard for what Troth has said in his latest message.

Cheers,

Rick H
