I can't address the password protection issue since I don't use it. 
 However, my screen goes blank after 15 minutes.  To change the time 
when your screen goes black, go to settings/control panel/display/screen 
saver/.  At the bottom of this page is "Energy saving features of 
monitor."  Click on settings and change the time to turn off the 
monitor.  I'm running Windows 98SE, so your screens may be set up 
somewhat differently.  Hope this helps.
