Then I suspect a possibly corrupted Word Normal.dot file.  This is the file 
that Word uses store all of the default formatting for any new .doc files it 
is asked to create.  If something within it gets a little corrupted, it 
could cause any number of problems.  The cure is to locate & delete this 
file with Word closed.  When you reopen Word, it will create a new one 
automatically.  I prefer to reboot before reopening Word, but I have never 
seen that stated as a necessity.
