I think Avast is a good one, but I believe it still requires you to run
scans *manually*.  If you can remember to do that, it's great.  Otherwise,
and if you're running a later model of Windows, AVG is also good and you can
schedule scans.  If interested in AVG, search for "download free AVG" --they
do encourage you to buy--but the *free* version is good.  We used it for
years, as well as Avast on the older Windows computers when AVG stopped
supporting them.  Still use it on the few Windows machines we have, running
mostly Ubuntu linux.
