Ah, you just reminded me that I did read something on this a while back. 
The only way to get the English spell checking back is to install a 
component from an earlier version of Office.  If I come across the article 
again, I'll share what it ways about the whole fiasco (you may have already 
found it during your own research).

You'd think that MS would have released a simple patch to satisfy those 
unhappy folks by now.
