You might have disabled it from startup.  Run msconfig
then...in Win98 under the startup tab Critical Update should
be checked, in XP, I'm not sure, I think it's under the
services tab, there's one that's automatic updates and
there's also one that says Alerter, I have them both
unchecked (or stopped) on my daughter's computer and it's
seldom online, so I'm not sure what's what.

I used to have an icon in the tray that would always come on
whenever there
was an update..don't know what happened but its gone and I
keep forgetting
to check thru the icon in " start"..
