In the configuration or setup (differs between programs) there is usually an
option to delete mail from server after downloading it, or leave it on the
server for a period of time.  Many people like to do this when they travel
and use a laptop -- but want their mail at home.  They look at mail while
gone (on the laptop) but actually download it to their home computer when
they get home - then it's deleted from the server.  In this example the
program on the laptop would be set to leave mail on the server -- the home
computer would be set to delete mail from the server.
