Pat,
I'm really glad to hear that he's now "cooking". Given his situation,
that's great news. :O)

MS stopped creating updates for WinME years ago, but the ones they had
made up to that point are still necessary. My impression is that all of
MS's previous operating systems can and should be updated, but the ability
of them to use Windows Update is still in question. When I run one of the
older OS's, I update them with the patches I had collected over the years
and I NEVER take them online or connect them to my main network (which would
give them net access and, more importantly, give the net access to them
lol). Still, WU may still work for WinME and, if it does, should definitely
be used to update it until there are no more updates available (keep running
it until it tells you there's nothing to update). If it turns out that WU
won't work, give a yell and we'll see if we can't locate a third party that
has made all of the updates available for situations like this.

I also have to mention that, since ME is no longer getting updates, it
is absolutely necessary to make sure he's running some quality security
software to keep out the nasties, crackers and other buggies that will be
constantly pounding on his virtual doorstep. At a minimum, he needs a good
firewall and antivirus app running at all times. I'll recommend the free
version of ZoneAlarm for the firewall chores, but you'll probably need to
teach him how to only allow stuff that's appropriate. If you're more comfy
with a different firewall app, by all means, use that instead. Same idea
goes for the AV program. There's a new free open source AV app called
ClamWin that really looks promising, but I haven't tested it yet. It may be
exactly what he needs, but I'll leave that decision up to you.

Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help. :O)

Peace,
GMan

The only dumb questions are the ones we fail to ask.
