Saving the .dbx files are fine... but, if you need to do a search, how do you search .dbx files? You can't. I need a way to save old mails, and be able to search them at will. Preference would be saving them to disk. Then, when the time comes, if I need to search mail from January of 2002, I take out the CD marked "Jan-2002" and do a search for a keyword in the mail. Now, saving the individual emails... for me, that's not efficient. I have approximately 300 emails daily I am looking to archive. Saving each individual email would basically guarantee me a divorce. :) ---Troth ----- Original Message ----- From: geekette To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, August 09, 2002 11:22 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: Archiving Old Mail I have a whole drive dedicated to email [not on the same drive as my OS] I keep my .dbx folders there labeled by month and year as I change the storage space monthly. For long-term storage, I have also created file folders that have descriptive names like "Dorothy" or "Database Management Class DIscussion" I save the emails as .eml files and give them names that are meaningful to me rather than-=PCTechTalk=-Archiving Old Mail, I might name it "orig post archiving mail ~000~" so that I have the sender's name in the name. Many times I can remember the person who had the answer to my question even if I can't remember the question. I also change the replies so that they are not all named "Re: -=PCTechTalk=- Archiving Old Mail" on ten different replies. This is more time-consuming than you might want, but I have used this system successfully for many years. YMMV. I back up all my files to two CDs in case of CD failure. ellie ----- Original Message ----- From: ~OoO~ To: PCTechTalk Sent: Friday, August 09, 2002 10:03 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Archiving Old Mail C'mon, fellas... We need to get into the "this way is better than that way" mode... this is the mode that gets everyone competing, and hence usually some very good responses/solutions to some of the more "simpler" things in the world of PCs. Now that everyone's ears flicked up a bit, and I've got you all saying "WHAT THE HECK IS HE TALKING ABOUT, THAT MORON," let me tell you what I really need... I need to archive mail... and, not really just small amounts of mail, but rather LARGE amounts of mail. And, of course, more mail will add to this over time. What I want to know is for those of you that archive or save your mails (for whatever reason, be it to save PCTechTalk posts, or maybe to blackmail someone), how are you doing that archiving? I need to be able to look up certain emails occasionally, via keywords in the email, and don't know any other way of archiving with Outlook Express other than just keeping them in their respective folders with OE, and occasionally backing up the DBX files in the event of a crash. But, overall, being able to save to a CD-R and dating the CD-R would be nice. Does anyone use and/or recommend using another email client besides Outlook Express, which might make archiving easier? Eudora Pro was suggested, but very vaguely... supposed to be good for saving old mails, but I've never really investigated that. Can Eudora users give their side to it? What about outside help... you know, third-party software... any recommendations?
