This type of gremlin can only be investigated with the system (or at least the drive) right in front of one of us. I suspect dust, dirt or some other type of obstruction has gotten inside the eject button, but I'll never be able to test that theory from here (plus it could be something else entirely, like a partially inserted power plug). To test the first idea, the drive will need to be removed from the system, the front bezel will need to be removed from the drive and then the entire area around the eject button will need to be examined to see if anything is impeding the travel of the button.
