Hi Robert, well this seems to be the solution--no more grinding sounds and I 
thank you so much!  If it starts again I'll take John's suggestion regarding 
the BIOS, but I'm a little scared to go there, this simple solution is more my 
speed.--Glo

  This can sometime happen. If you had a floppy in dive
  'a' and using windows explorer you accessed that
  floppy then removed the floppy windows gets stupid and
  will continually search drive 'a' first and, if the
  drive is empty just grind the head against the stop.
  Try this, put a disk in drive 'a' then using windows
  explorer access the 'a' drive, with the floppy still
  in drive 'a' access any other drive 'c' for instance,
  at this time take the floppy from drive 'a' and close
  explorer. This    may stop the problem.
