Bob,

Welcome to the list! See comments about CD Rom drives to Stephen. This may
help you resolve your problem. If after reinstalling the device and you
still get the same error I would go get another drive.

Hello
Yes I'm a newbie to this list. And I joined for two reasons....

1. I am a novice when it comes to the workings of computers. =
Therefore when I have a computer problem, I want to be able to get =
accurate help. For instance; recently on my back-up computer (which =
was on my personal network), I started having several problems. I =
suspected a virus of some kind but my virus programs failed to find one. =
Then my floppy drive quit. When I opened my bios and looked my 3 1/2 =
floppy did not even show up. I was convinced that some kind of virus =
had infected the computer. So after having made sure I had no critical =
files on this computer, I ran f-disk. Now the computer will not boot. =
The floppy is still gone. It does not register as even being there. =
Then I found out that floppy drives can (and do) go bad. (See Langa =
List newsletter) now I have a very large desk paper weight.

2. A friend of mine recommended this list (pchelper) as being run by =
responsible people. Who knows, I might even have met one or more of =
them on some conventions I have attended for other reasons. (One might =
have been a convention in Australia where my wife and I had the =
privilege of touring New Zealand en route to the convention in Brisbane. =
Then on to Sydney where we also gained new friends that we had never =
met before.

Any way, I need help with various computer problems as they occur. =
For instance; my cd-rom drive and an older Canon printer just quit. A =
new printer is on my shopping list, no problem. But my cd-rom, that is =
a different problem. I need that for research all the time. I have =
need to access one disk every week. When I try to use it an error =
message appears that says the device is not ready. I do not know what =
to do. I do not want to buy a new computer right now. Is the simplest =
solution to just buy a new cd-rom drive and hope?
