Hi folks,
My cable tester fried the other day, when I tested the cable between a
time clock and computer, forgetting that the time clock got power
through the cable.
I've spent most of today looking for a replacement tester. I've found
several that looked interesting for one reason or other, along with
similar devices.
The one that I decided to get is a Test-Um LanScaper NT750, which
has a list price of a whopping US$419.95. I've found prices as low as
$290, though, and I'm bidding on a used one at present.

The $15 Elston cat5 cable tester seems to be an excellent deal for
someone wanting a cheap cable tester, since it appears to do a
conductor test ("wire mapping"), not a pair test (like most cheap ones
are), AND it's the cheapest cable tester I've seen so far, period. The
same thing is available for $79-119 from a number of vendors, but with
manual/auto buttons (that's what my old tester was); this one is auto
only; the manual mode isn't much loss.
