"Safe Haven and the Sanctuary Movement"
Here is the link to this important video. It goes over the origins of
Sanctuary in the churches, as refugees from El Salvador and Guatemala fled
from U.S.-backed death squads during the Reagan years. Now, immigrants who
have lived here many years face deportation as families are broken up and
lives up-ended.
The "underground railroad" has a long history in struggle in the U.S.
I think we could show this in class. As expected in the "mainstream"
press, they go to some pains to be "even-handed" in treatment of racist
reaction and role of the police. That would make for interesting discussion.
Crucial point --our starting point is our base in our own mobilizations,
not look to elected officials or administrative promises and agendas
