For those members who have the June 2018 issue of “Sky and Telescope” look
at two articles. The first article is on pages 8 and 9 under the topic
COSMOLOGY with the title “Signal from First Stars Suggests Primordial
Chill.” The article refers to the EDGES (Experiment to Detect the Global
Epoch of Reionization Signature) Project headed by Judd Bowman of Arizona
State University. Tom Mozdzen, the speaker at the PAS October 2018
meeting, is one of the scientists who worked on this project and his
presentation will be on the EDGES Project. I attended Judd Bowman’s
presentation in April on the EDGES Project and his presentation was
excellent. He made the science behind the project understandable and the
project and all its problems very interesting. I recommend every one who
can attend the October presentation to attend.
The second article is titled “Space Rock Rendezvous” and is on pages 22
through 28. The article describes two missions to two different asteroids
from two countries. The first mission described is the Japanese Hayabusa 2
mission to the asteroid Ryugu. The second mission is the American
Osiris-REX mission to Bennu. One of the scientists on the project team is
Dolores Hill from Arizona State University. She gave an excellent
presentation to PAS several years ago on the Osiris-REX project.
I think both of these articles are interesting and have relevance to PAS
speakers and the kind of speakers PAS would like to have.
