Saw this with the ob&c yesterday. The sound quality was poor for most of the
dialogue, particular the exterior shots, so for those with impaired speech
discrimination will have a hard time with it. Other than that, it is a
fascinating slice of post V-E Day life in The Netherlands based on events
during the war. There are actually two main characters which we don't figure
out until after the first is introduced, one of whom is played by Guy Pearce in
a performance as brilliant as they come, and the other is a Danish actor, Claes
Bang, who is not bad. I have been a Guy Pearce fan for twenty years, since he
starred in Memento, a haunting movie. The big problem with this movie is that
the director, Dan Friedkin, is not in a class with those who could have made
this a truly great movie (Francis Ford Coppola comes to mind), with the
secondary characters not sufficiently developed and sometimes too cartoonish.
Nonetheless, a movie worth seeing.
