Thanks for this Paul - it's very informative. You say that the pollen intake
increases significantly when bees are about to swarm - why is that? Am I
right that the bees only take honey with them, not pollen? So are they
stocking up for the eggs and larvae they're leaving behind with a reduced
workforce?
The bees in my horizontal top bar hive have been bearding strongly the last
couple of days - see photo. The layer of bees is pretty thick. The
temperature underneath the hive has reached a maximum of 19 degrees, while
that in the hive above the top bars is up to 34 degrees - presumably because
the bees have brood and they've raised the temperature. The bees outside the
hive don't seem to be doing anything much - though it is difficult for the
bees carrying pollen to get through! - are they just keeping out of the way
because it's hot and busy inside, and a more pleasant temperature outside?
The hive has comb running along the length almost to the end of the hive,
but they still have some unoccupied space inside. Is it an indication that
the colony might swarm soon?
I've had two callouts to swarms locally yesterday and today - though in
each case the bees departed before I arrived (and in the second case,
fortunately, before I left home) - so the weather conditions must be suitable.

Swarms were reported in Suffolk and Hampshire on 8th April. People are
reporting scouts checking out bait hives in Lancashire & Sussex. We've
probably got 1-3 weeks before they start here.
If your strong hive suddenly seems weak, with remarkably few flyers, look
around. You may find a swarm hanging nearby.
if your hive swarms make a note of the date. They may well throw out
afterswarms 7-8 days later. (It's at this point you may hear piping,
tooting, quacking as the new queens negotiate, kill each other etc.)
Signs of imminent swarming:
- Large, bustling colony running out of room. In my experience hives don't
often swarm if they were only established last year, though some
particularly strong ones do.
- In particular, a huge rise in numbers without a matching increase in comb
- resulting in clusters of bees hanging under comb but not "chaining" to
build new comb
- Drones present (Will has seen these)
- Hot, settled weather - a few days of baking sun is a trigger. Although
they prefer to swarm above 20C, we have a long warm dry spell ahead, peaking
around 17C in a week.
- Amount of pollen being gathered rises dramatically (hundreds of bees
arriving a minute with full pollen baskets) just before swarming
- Sound of the hive changes to a steady, deep monotone hum a few minutes
before swarming. (This is the drones, their wings beat at a deeper, louder
tone than workers').
Best get your swarm collection kit ready:
- Sheet
- Protective gear
- Ventilated box
- Duct tape
- Feather / bee brush
- Water, mobile phone / camera, snack (for you)
- Make sure you have a hive set up ready for the bees
- Scent bait boxes eg with comb / wax cappings, propolis, 1-2 drops of
lemongrass oil
Below is the latest list of who is after swarms. If you have, or hear of, a
spare one remember we try to re-home them near their point of origin.
