Hello All,
I have just assembled a new TBH and I am now contemplating the best location in
my garden. I have two/three locations in mind (see images):
1) Next to a mound, but just under the edge of a canopy of a cherry plum
tree. Garden path and lawn in front used by me, husband and dog. In full
morning sun and fairly deep afternoon shade in Summer. Opening of hive would
be south or South-East, facing the mound. Top of mound does need to be mowed
once a week.
2) Next to garage and hedge, in full morning sun. A very sheltered and
very warm area of the garden. Entrance facing South/South-East toward hedge.
This area of the garden is left to be a bit wild, hedge will need cutting at
some point.
3) Behind the mound at far corner. I currently host a beehive in this
location. It's the third year in this spot, which is a quiet and very secluded
part of the garden. The colony has always survived the winter and thrives in
the Spring but this doesn't continue through the summer, possibly because it is
very shaded during summer. The current plan is to relocate this hive to see if
it does better.
So, all views and opinions welcome. Also, can I be added to the swarm list? I
am in Abingdon and welcome any local oxnatbee keepers to come and visit.
