Kathleen, I’m really glad that Howe Press is going to send you a box in order
to get the brailler back to them via Fedex or UPS. Apparently, HumanWare, who
makes the Victor Streams and other products for the blind and low vision
people, does the same thing. Very glad they’re sending you the box with the
addressed label. You may have to get the UPS or Fedex person to make sure
before the address label is stuck onto the box that they have the authorization
number written down on the box. I would imagine that Howe Press will give you
that authorization number to write down somehow.
Wow, I sure hope you get the credit card! Given that you were having trouble
with the post office, I’m surprised your bank sent it via U. S. post office a
second time. They sure should have sent it by either Fedex or UPS, whichever
carrier they use, but they probably wanted to go more cheaply.
I can well imagine folks are getting really sick not having heat in the winter
time! Mercy, you folks have been through so cotton pickin’ much in getting
that building renovated! And you’ve probably had no idea as to what to expect
when and weren’t involved in the planning at all. I can see why they wouldn’t
have had all of you involved, but they could have picked a couple of you to
represent you as a group sort of like Congress represents us as constituents.
(At least in theory, right?)
Yes, I’m glad your friend in Vermont told you to insure the brailler, and I’ve
heard $750.00 as the figure of the braillers’ worth that they quote as well.
Glad you have shopping done for the next couple of months. Wow, you’re really
prepared!

Linda I'm going to send it back to help press. I was talking to a friend of
mine in Vermont and he said to ensure it for replacement value if I send it.
I'm going to send it back via UPS not the post office. After the post office is
lost my credit card I'm not really sure if I trust him to take care of this.
That's exactly what I'm going to do But I'll tell you this much I hope nothing
more breaks. This is totally ridiculous. Now I'm waiting for my second credit
card to come. And the bank told me of this one got lost they would FedEx it.
They saw the FedEx the second one. But no they sent it through the post office.
And I even told him to FedEx it. But anyway the bank official did read me the
credit card number but he tried to tell me that they were obligated to make
their stuff accessible to the blind well I kind of different with his opinion
because he claimed that he talk to their lawyers. And I sure don't agree with
it. And neither does my friend in Vermont. But anyway if they can fix this
braille writer I'll sure be glad because every time I go to write for oil on it
all the key stick I need all six of them plus of and I have to manually on
stick them. And this is really crazy. Anyway from my friend in Vermont told me
that help wrestle send you a shipping box and a label. And that's a good thing
too. Then all I have to do is have UPS come and get it or I'll just take it
down the block to the UPS store. And that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Because this thing needs to go out.

Once a long time ago, I put “brailler repair” in the Google search box and
found quite a number of repairers around the country. Some were individuals
who repaired braillers privately for individuals and for school districts while
others like the prison system in Vacaville, California had a special program
where the prisoners were trained in how to repair braillers and only charged
for the parts with which to fix them. I did have a good experience with a man
in Baltimore, Maryland probably close to eight years ago, but don't ’now if
he’s still in business as he was a retired computer programmer at that time.
I’ve had very good luck with the Howe Press, and turn-around time was pretty
minimal. Of course, since they manufacture the braillers originally, they’re
sure to make the necessary repairs right from the start and send you out a
brailled line or two as a test of your repaired brailler. Will gladly look up
information as needed, though certainly I won’t know shipping prices. The best
I’ll be able to find would be phone numbers, but not all listings have phone
numbers.

Does AFB American Foundation for the Blind have a contact for braille writer
repair? Seems like being in New York, they would provide at least referral
service for that kind of thing.

Subject: [ourplace] Re: hello from the Wayner
Well until I can get my computer set up I won't be able to share music. But if
it's some fine it will work with a Mac that might be good. Then I might be able
to hear music but I'm not really sure how to do it. And I might be able to get
some of the albums that I've lost two. And I've lost quite a few of them. Well
I thought things only break in threes but I guess for me it's number four. Now
it's the braille writer. I want to write down my credit card number in braille
and all the keys on my braille writer stop no matter what age I did. No I've
got to send it out. So actually I have to find somebody that can help me pack
it up and address it because I'm either going to send it to the American
printing House for the blind or to help press for repairs. If I send it to the
American printing House for cleaning and whatever it's $150. But if I send it
to Perkins or could be more could be less. The boy things happen at a very
inopportune time. I want to my class last night but a lot of it was visual.
Actually they were using voltmeters and stuff to measure different things and
of course I couldn't do it because I didn't have any talking meters. But that's
OK. And then I was worried about the braille writer and I forgot to call my
friend to tell him I was going to the class and I just left so hopefully he's
not going to be mad at me. I'll have to talk to him later and let him know that
I just had a lot of my mind. This morning I went shopping and got all that done
and came home and my knees were talking to me. My worker put everything away
and now she's downstairs doing the sheets. Actually I put a lot of the
perishables away and I put some of it away that she had to finish it. I told
her I was sorry about that but my knees just wouldn't let me finish it. I lay
down for a while and that was it. And I also got some money back on my energy
rebate. In the store people weren't going to give me the whole amount but then
they decided to. So I'm really happy I got my shopping done and everything is
all done and I'm sure glad it's over.

I think that was part of it. He said the list was turning into a chat group but
I told him we still share music from time to time as well as blindness-related
articles.

Was it the high volume of traffic that caused him to leave in the first place?
