John, great help you are! I have a turntable which I can put onto my desk and
connect via patch cord to my computer. I've connectedpatch cords to my stereo
in the living room but given that it's in another room, I'm not all that good at
using it because it's hard to start recording at the beginning of the album with
that turntable given I have to get back to my computer in time to start the
recording process. Great suggestions, though.

Hi Rick, to go from your reciever to the computer, you just need patch
cords with 3.5 MM stereo jacks on one end, to go in to the line input of
your sound card, and RCA jacks on the other end for your reciever. As I
said, I have my computer in the tape monitor loop, so I can play and
record with the PC, just as if it were a tape deck. I have never seen
those stand alone burners with a turntable, but I would imagine it would
be a compramize at best, and you would be forced to burn CD's even if all
you wanted to do was to put the material on your hard drive. If you
already have a good turntable, chances are it's a hell of alot better
than any stand alone unit!
