Its a big oops, and an apology. I was misinformed by an old orchid friend. I
won’t name names, for fear of embarassment to all concerned.
The big cymbidium exhibit, which was single flowers of over a hundred different
, but all surely award quality, flowers of cymbidiums, on a sort of skeleton
pyramid structure, was down to the Eric Young Foundation , not Burnham.
Incidentally, I heard ( at the very pleasant evening (extra event) open only to
those who had bought tickets for it some weeks earlier - rather like the night
before the show events they often have before the London show - a glass of
bubbly or a soft drink, and canapes which appeared at intervals for the whole 3
hour period ( plus a bar )that we had beaten all estimates and records for
attendance at either our own orchid shows anywhere, or for shows at Highcliffe
Castle. In fact more attended on Saturday than had been hoped for or dreamt of
for the whole weekend. A great result for the very hard-working Show Committee,
and the vision of the general Committee in undertaking what some might have
thought of as a great gamble. And no, I am not on either committee - I guess
that As I near my 90th I am regarded as too old to be expected to do the work
involved in either.( I did give a lot of encouragement [!], advice on the
contract with the Council who own the Castle, and a bit of sponsorship).
I am hoping to go back for my third visit for the last hour of the show,
thinking, well maybe I could squeeze in a few more orchids if the Taiwan people
offer big discounts “sell-off” , but I guess that won’t happen.
But - as advice to others in similar situations in the future, I did a
pre-order with Orchis , buying their “own clone” varieties of a lot of plants
which interest me ( any nursery which puts its name to a variety really thinks
that plant is special -or why do it ! ) and worried about the prices -
typically US$ 6 or as ‘sometimes 10 per plant, and then found that what I got
was very similar to the plants they were selling from the stand at £20 or
more... Best buy indeed .
