I would only add that you have to give the number of entries as well as the filename and password. The number of entries probably should be more than one if you have sys logged on anywhere. On the database server, type the following: Orapwd file=orapw(ora_sid) password=(password). This will create the file named orapw(ora_sid) within the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory. You can type orapwd for help. Make sure that the remote_login_password param = exclusive. You will then be able to connect remotely as sys/pw@remotesid as sysdba; Read up on Orapwd and remote_Login_password in the Oracle docs. Good Luck. I tried and found it did seem to not be available. Do you mean *only* connecting to SYS as sysdba? If so then yes it is entirely a security mechanism. If you are talking about remote connection then there is some work to be done to trust the remote connection, but set oracle_sid=<blah> (make sure the env var applies ) sqlplus "/ as sysdba" will work fine. Even on windows, which is nice. -- Niall Litchfield Oracle DBA http://www.niall.litchfield.dial.pipex.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe send email to: oracle-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. -- Archives are at //www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/ FAQ is at //www.freelists.org/help/fom-serve/cache/1.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe send email to: oracle-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. -- Archives are at //www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/ FAQ is at //www.freelists.org/help/fom-serve/cache/1.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe send email to: oracle-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. -- Archives are at //www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/ FAQ is at //www.freelists.org/help/fom-serve/cache/1.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe send email to: oracle-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. -- Archives are at //www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/ FAQ is at //www.freelists.org/help/fom-serve/cache/1.html -----------------------------------------------------------------
