I didn't see anyone mention this (off) topic on the list.
On Dec 7th, 3 PM EST there was a podcast for VMware with several guests
discussing virtualizing Oracle databases on VMware vSphere.

A virtualized 4 node, 12 cores per socket, 1 socket per node, 48 core
Oracle Standard Edition RAC cluster was mentioned.
That would handle being a node down much better than a pair of dual
socketed boxes/blades and still perhaps jump through the licensing hoops.
