Matt,

So the first question still applies.  Do the two machines have the same
timestamp?  Wolfgang & I are guessing that they do not match.

Sorry, I should have explained a little better.

This is a veritas cluster (non-RAC/OPS) on solaris 8
with oracle 8.1.7.4  that failed
over from one node to another because the network=20 connectivity between
the two nodes failed.  Multiple times.

That's what I was thinking of, but I was not sure if Matt's thread was
dealing with RAC (two servers) or not.

Are the clocks on the two servers in sync?
