I've never heard of a situation where you pay a third party rather than
Oracle.

First, why? To save money? Not sure you'd save very much in the long run.

Second, how does this work? You buy license from Oracle, but not
support? Then how do you get upgrades and patches? From third party?
And they're legally authorized by Oracle to provide patches and upgrades?

Not sure how this would work, legally or ethically.

I would proceed with extreme caution, and make sure I understood all
ethical and legal aspects of the situation before paying any money or
signing any contracts....

Personally, I don't think I'd enter into such an agreement, but perhaps
I'm missing something.....

Hi All,

Recently I've had discussions and know of companies that have decided to
not pay the Oracle support licence and do it via a third party.

Anyone know the ins and outs of this?

Are you able to receive patches via the third party seeing you are not
paying support?

Personally, for me, support through the third party means that I don't
have access to html://support.oracle.com and that I am unable to open
service requests. As a DBA, that would mean professional death. I would not
be a DBA for an employer who doesn't have support for their Oracle
databases. That's probably a little unexpected angle, but I am no longer a
DBA, so I can say that. And I still do have access to the artist formerly
known as Metalink, just in case.
