I knew what you meant about the TWO_TASK variable. I hadn't thought of it
until you mentioned it. It is certainly acting like this, though. I just
can't figure out where it's trying to connect to. There's nothing else on the
VM.
It is an old-style instance. We aren't planning on going to CDB/PDB until 12.2.

Subject: Re: Strange Error In SQL*Plus
I'll try to finish that without accidentally pressing send:
Is TWO_TASK set causing a connection over SQL net.
Is it a CDB/PDB or old-style instance?

I am trying to create a new database on a new VM. The Oracle software has been
installed, but when I try to run SQL*Plus, with no database, I get an
ORA-01017. Normally when I do this, I get "Connected to an idle instance." But
I have 2 VMs that return an ORA-01017 instead and I can't do anything.
I am working on Red Hat 7, Oracle 12.1.0.2 with the October, 2016 PSU installed.
I have successfully created databases on 7 other VMs.
What can cause this? The sys admins say that all of the VMs are identical, but
I don't think so.
