IMHO the real question is, is Sparc making any money? If the sales are
enough to leave a profit after the costs of Sparc and Solaris development
are factored in, then I can see both Sparc and Solaris hanging around. If
it is not making a profit, it wouldn't surprise me if both get dropped or
sold on. Solaris is tied to Sparc, since the x86 version failed to get any
traction, so I don't see how the future of Solaris can be considered
separately to the future of Sparc.
I don't hear of people planning *new* systems on Sparc, so it certainly
sounds like a dying platform. There will invariably be people who will
linger, figuring it's easier to keep existing projects on Solaris/Sparc
than migrate them, but this is just delaying the inevitable. Linux has won
this war. Might as well deal with it and move on. Microsoft have. :)
