In RHEL 3 you had to re-link gcc and if you didn't you ended up with this issue and the fix was to echo "" into the ls.so.preload and then remove it. Once this was done you had to re-apply the patch after making sure that gcc was linked correctly. Not sure if this appies in RHEL 4 or not.
