Resent after edit.. <rant>Ecartis tries to stop vacation mail so you cannot even say "walk *** office" in your post!! Perfectly acceptable English I would have thought!</rant>

I disagree. When I found myself in the exact same situation, several years ago, Books Online was the first source I turned to. I found them to be about just as useful as the rest of Microsoft (doesn't) Help - Not at all.

I proceeded to walk out of the workplace and into the nearest Borders store (big bookshop here in Brissie) and buy myself the first beginners guide on SQLServer that I saw: "Teach yourself SQLServer 7 in 21 days" from SAMS. It was infinitely more useful as a quick step-up than all of books-online. In the mean time I have graduated from SS7 to 2008, but still the books-online are mostly confusing and useless to me.

I'd say Google and Amazon are your friends. Google for specific topics and Amazon to find out which guide for your specific version other people rate highly, e.g. SQLServer 2008: http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1279273326/ref=sr_st?keywords=sql+server+2008+administration&page=1&rh=n%3A!1000%2Ci%3Astripbooks%2Ck%3Asql+server+2008+administration&sort=reviewrank_authority

Training would of course be preferable, but who'll pay for it? :/

hth,
Tony

Seeing that this is your first time, I would recommend your company sending you
on SQL Server training conducted by Microsoft. After that, you can dive into
all the reference materials and books you want.
i found myself in the same boat. I was an Oracle DBA (10yrs exp.) for a
Microsoft partner, and when all the Oracle jobs dried up in that town, they
said, seeing that you are an Oracle DBA you must can administer SQL Server. So
there began my dual life. Take if from me, do the MS training, less pain and
quicker time to ramp up.
