ZDLRA is built on top of Exadata hardware. That should give you an idea on the 
cost.. [😉]


We have one of those.. Some of its features are:

* ZDLRA needs level-0 backup only the first time, and from that point forever 
level-1 backups.

* Oracle internally "constructs" point-in-time backup based on the level-0  
backup and the level-1 backups.

* Since you don't have to worry about level-0 backups on a daily/weekly basis, 
your backup window is daily level-1 backups which are very quick

* Policy driven backups, simple to manage from a single place.

* Real-time redo feature backs up transactions from redolog (similar to 
goldengate or shareplex) to the backup appliance (minimizing the loss of data).

* Supports backups on infiniband and 10gigabit networks (we use 10gigabit)

* Since it was built on Exadata platform, it has the bundled quarterly patches 
as well

I think that was me :-)

My comments were purely for SQL Server  technology (logshipping, mirroring and 
always on) not for all technologies in the wild.

I do believe zero data loss is possible and also do believe that it will be 
expensive, but that is just an assumption.

There was an assertion on the list that zero data loss was not possible. It is 
completely possible. Whether it is expensive compared to value is an entirely 
different question that should vary by so many factors it is ludicrous to 
consider in a vacuum.

As with availability, zero data loss is not, in my opinion, likely to be 
economically supportable as a single monolithic solution across all systems at 
a given company.

Effectively determining which data and which services are supported at 
particular service levels is probably the single biggest cost of operations 
control, regardless of technology.

Axxana – completely possible.



But at what cost? I've been asked about zero data loss for some medical data 
and looked at Far Sync... But knew the customer wanted a solution for $0.00 so 
never ended up calling Axxana. Any idea how much one of those boxes goes for?
