Section 2 of Metalink note 120282.1 confirms that it is actually deleted since
8.1.6, however the 9i and 11g docs below indicate that it's deleted from the
Recovery Catalog, however only flagged as DELETED in the controlfile so I guess
that's the source of the confusion:

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmconc3.htm#463435

"The DELETE EXPIRED command removes the recovery catalog records for expired
backups and copies, and updates their control file records to status DELETED."

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmmaint.htm#BRADV89637

"As with other forms of the DELETE command, the files deleted are removed from
backup media, deleted from the recovery catalog, and marked as DELETED in the
control file."

Brandon
