No it's when Dan wants to celebrate his 40th birthday so he can fool
everyone into thinking he's younger than he is. Today is his 40th.

  Whats a catch-42, a catch-22 that's 20 years old?

Ah, the chicken or the egg...

Control files are identified by the parameter (spfile/init.ora) file. If
you kept the parameters in the control file, how would the database know
which control files to read? And if a control file was lost? How would
you edit the control file to change the parameter to point to a
   different control file?

   Sounds like a catch-42.

Why complicate things indeed? If it had to be a binary file,
it could well have been the control file as you suggest.
All this spfile/pfile rigmarole is just an unnecessary
and unwarranted complication. But it's great to generate
   revenue out of OCP training...
