The server I'm trying to set up is a stand-alone server in a different data
canter. It is supposed to use ASM to see the replicated diskgroups. I
found my problem with the sever already thinking it has another ASM
instance on it - the sys admin created this server by cloning the
production server, which included /etc/oratab. Once I removed the entry in
oratab, the installation was able to proceed.
Still would like to hear from anyone who has any experience with this. I
think the storage admin and myself pretty much have it figured out, but it
would be nice to know if there's anything someone has run into that might
create issues.

Hi David,
ASM is a volume manager, nothing else. It also has a kernel part. I am not
sure that having two ASM instances is even possible, since I have never
tried it. I certainly don't understand why would you want to have two
copies of the volume manager running simultaneously?
