Although I only have experience with the HA configurations, I would have to
agree. We've found the ODA patching process, for instance, to be far more
fragile and failure-prone than a normal cluster... I'm not joking when I say
that we've been opening a SR for a new and improved patching failure every
single quarter.
The most recent example being that Oracle forgot to mention in the release
notes that the 18.7 update requires a full outage of the cluster stack (due to
the disabling of HAIP). After which it took them a couple of weeks to figure
out why our patching resulted in unexpected downtime.
Given that Oracle controls both the hardware and software, I would have
expected the patching process to be relatively bulletproof. Unfortunately I'm
not sure they could have missed the mark further if they tried.
Your experience shows us the exact opposite - reducing the number of vendors
on the stack, actually, doesn’t increase the quality. The reason might be the
diffusion of responsibility (

monolithic organization, where each actor relies on the others to take the
responsibility for the final result. An open system consisted of components
(hardware, software, OS…) produced by multiple vendors might have created the
tension for each of them to test better.
