A google.search throws up a few hits, but I'm not clear on the original source. 
It's complete bunk, of course - and if true should be treated as a bug.

What site did you read that?

Aside from a bug in 10.2.0.2 when combined with auto SGA-management, I
haven't had any problems with the GATHER_STATS_JOB nightly/weekend
job.
