Brandon,

Shutdown immediate is a controlled crash.

Do a shutdown immediate.  Then a startup.  Review the alert.log file.
Your will see a recovery takes place.

Compare this with a shutdown and a shutdown abort.

Simple test to see how it works.

Am I missing something, or is that statement incorrect?  I've never
heard of shutdown immediate requiring instance recovery.
