Larry,

Control file auto backups are registered via Rman.

Start Rman on your database server. Connect to your database and rman
repository (if you are using it).

Type SHOW ALL;

You should see an entry for "CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;".
This automatically performs a controlfile backup when you run any Rman
backup, and also when you change the database structure (like add a
tablespace).

Also look at the CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE
DISK TO '{file name}' entry.

This probably says '/oracle/9.2/dbs/%F' or something like that. These
two params are generating the controlfile backups for you.

You can change either of these by simply entering them again; Like :

CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF;

CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'new disk
directory';

I would leave the autoback "ON". You probably want to change the disk
directory and place this backup someplace where you can manage it. I
put all of these in a directory and have them backed up to tape with my
Rman disk backups.

Tom

Thanks Dennis.

I looked in cron again and didn't see any RMAN jobs, but I remembered
I'd seen the following in the alert log

drop tablespace M11_DATA including contents and datafiles

  Deleted file /u03/oradata/m11_data01.dbf

 Starting control autobackup

 Control autobackup written to DISK device

 >       handle '/oracle/9.2/dbs/c-2180204055-20050807-0f'

 Completed: drop tablespace M11_DATA including conten

      So how do I turn off "Control autobackup" ?

      Thanks

      Larry

I have seen RMAN do this. There is a setting to autobackup the control
file. I would keep searching for an RMAN job running somewhere, either
through a cron job or an OEM job.
