I think you're dealing with two issues here. And in balance you can't have
both: the greater photographic education the user has the more basic the camera
can be.
The less photographically educated would require and more sophisticated camera.

We want this for non Ophthalmology users to take images. The won't want to
work too hard to get decent photos so the camera has to be easy to use and
produce reliably decent images.
