To me, lap is far less controllable than on mat against side of Optacon to provide firm surface and more friction for control of the rotation rate of the cylindrical reading surface. Usually people hold the bottle or can in their lap and use the optacon to read what's visible, then turn the can or bottle a little to see more letters. If the line goes from the top to the bottom of the bottle, hold it sideways in your lap and read what you can, then turn the thing so you can see the next few lines. Or, put the thing on a table and anchor it between bookends or something to keep it from rolling.
