In spite of the protestations and reasons given by broadcasters for opposing
Aereo ("no license to stream"), four+ years ago, my thinking was that Aereo's
only true sin was to charge a monthly fee. And not give the broadcasters their
pound of flesh. Because in every other respect, Aereo was a help to
broadcasters, broadening their audience, adding eyeballs to their commercials,
as one would expect from an apartment complex central antenna system. And more
so, since Aereo would also support mobile service. What's to complain about?
The monthly fee, that's all.
This quote seems to confirm what I had guessed:
"Locast has been around for about a year already and may have found a
legitimate loophole because it's a nonprofit, as federal law says nonprofits
can retransmit broadcasters' signals without violating their rights."
Whether federal law says this or not, the lack of monthly fee takes away the
controversy. Although, like the author, that by-appointment service would no
longer cut it for me either. Besides, my "antenna farm" in the fireplace works
pretty darned well too.
