Actually, you focus on the one aspect that is not at all significant. Local
broadcasters, and of course the TV networks too, already have web sites, so
they already support H.264. The significant point here is a new role for
broadcasters, at the edges of ISP networks, which could become a possibility
for wholesale migration to IP. We saw an article very recently, talking about
the importance of distance from edge servers to users, to make this delivery
method scale up.
do they really need ATSC 3.0
Just "branding," in this case. And since the ATSC 3.0 marketing hype is so
insistent on "IP," "interactive," "targeted ads," and "on demand," it would be
nice to see deployments that actually offer these new features. Otherwise, with
just more one-way broadcast, we're likely to see another round of dropped jaws,
when the innocent finally get clued in that this broadcast scheme ain't like
the Internet at all. (Remember how this also happened in the early days of DTV?)

Absolutely. And who wouldn't? More importantly, why wouldn't they?
But he left out the most important part of a paragraph he edited:
"Despite smart TV's dominance, growth in usage of connected-TV devices remains
robust, said the firm."
Trend lines, Craig. Just like UHF-to-VHF converters in the early 1960s, just
like STBs for ATSC, as the proper front ends get built in, the need for
external compatibility solutions diminishes. "Connected" TVs are simply the
next step. I know that you never thought any of this would happen, having been
indoctrinated by the walled garden solutions imposed on you by legacy MVPDs and
yet ... . Also note what Comcast is up to, in the article I just posted, along
these same lines.
Yes Bert PCs are unaffiliated...
With the big screen in the family room.
Maybe for digital illiterates. But it's far from true for those a little less
challenged. With HDMI, it's a no-brainer, and there are even wireless options.
There are tons of articles online that explain how it's done, going way back,
so hey, someone must be interested eh? Here are just a few. You should know how
to find this stuff, Craig.
