Apparently, you completely missed this AGAIN.
CBS chose to ask for monetary compensation for retrans consent after the 1992
Cable act was passed. This turned out to be a bad decision...
The rest of the broadcast networks demanded premium placement in the extended
basic bundle for NEW NETWORKS, rather than monetary compensation. By the end of
the decade (the '90s) five content congloms took control of 90% of the networks
in the extended basic bundle, either using retrans consent to create networks,
or buying up the networks created by the cable industry.
SO PLEASE STOP with the pretend game Bert.
Sorry, Craig. It's way past time for you to give this up. As long as the
owners of high value content are the congloms, not the local broadcasters,
there is no question that the pretend game exists. You circular arguments
are, as always, unconvincing.
You are incorrigible. The "pretend game" does not exist. Retrans Consent DOES
exist. And the FCC caps on station ownership exist. Nobody is saying that
affiliates control the content they deliver. Netflix does not control the
content they buy from the congloms - but they make money distributing it.
On the other hand, it would have been interesting to hear what the author
would suggest, to truly keep the broadcasters relevant.
Why?
The author clearly does not understand why the content congloms (and their
broadcast affiliates) will remain relevant. Why would he have anything useful
to say about their survival when he does not have a clue that he was wrong?
